چکیده
Purpose: In face of the need for sustainable solutions in the field of food waste management, the use of food waste disposal units (FWDs) and the anaerobic co-digestion of food waste with sewage sludge have recently been attracting more attention as an alternative to landfill. Methods: In this study a sustainability framework was developed in order to aid decision making in food waste management for these two options using a multi-criteria approach. This framework was applied in the Anglian region in the UK as a case study. Results: the anaerobic co-digestion of food waste with sewage sludge could be more sustainable than the use of FWDs. Nevertheless, this result only provides guidance to stakeholders, as the different primacies originating from them could possibly lead to a reversal in the overall outcome. Conclusions: the successful use of the sustainability framework depends largely on the thorough collection of detailed data. Data are essential components for the comprehensive assessment of the two food waste management options, as it matters when decisions are to be made especially for food waste management processes that require a large-scale of investment costs to be incurred. A holistic appraisal of the environmental, economic and social aspects of the use of FWDs and the anaerobic co-digestion of food waste with sewage sludge based on area-specific characteristics and practices is recommended for facilitating successful application of the sustainability framework and consequently the support of sound decision-making.

متن کاملBiogas generation from floral waste using different techniques
There is a great need to implement low-cost and user-friendly methods for further propagation of biogas technology in India. Environment unfriendly disposal of floral waste causes serious environmental pollution. Literature shows a limited research work regarding the anaerobic digestion of floral waste for biogas generation. The present experimental work aims to propagate floral waste as a sus...
متن کاملApplication of anaerobic digestion products of municipal solid food wastes in treating wastewaters
Anaerobic digestion is the breakdown of biodegradable organic material by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen or in an oxygen-starved environment. This technology is superior to the landfilling and also the aerobic composting. The aim of the present study was to examine whether the effluent Volatile Fatty Acids from the anaerobic acidogenesis of the food waste can be used du to its high valu...
متن کاملAn integrated approach of composting methodologies for solid waste management
Organic fraction of solid waste, which upon degradation produces foul smell and generates pathogens, if not properly managed. Composting is not a method of waste disposal but it is a method of waste recycling and used for agricultural purposes. An integrated approach of composting methodology was tested for municipal solid waste management. Solid waste first was composted and after 22 days, was...
متن کاملFood Losses and Waste: A Global Overview with a Focus on Near East and North Africa Region
Food losses refer to edible food mass decrease throughout the human food chain. Food losses occurring at consumption stage are called food waste. Food Losses and Waste (FLW) represent one of the most critical social, economic and ecological challenges facing humanity, besides being also an ethical issue. FAO data show that roughly one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wast...
